What is Large Format Printing?

Also known as wide format printing, the history of this digital printing technique is very short compared with that of the print industry overall because it only emerged at the end of the last century.

Wide-format digital printing services have evolved rapidly in the past 10-15 years after inkjet technology was pioneered by HP and Canon. The first wide format digital printers were Electrostatic technology, which pre-dates inkjet and was pioneered by Xerox.

Roll-fed and flatbed wide format digital printing refers to a digital printer, which is roll-fed or has a table where the substrate is loaded. Either the roll is fed through the printer or the table moves under a print head array.

UV solvent inks are then printed directly to the substrate through inkjets. Solvent-based inks adhere to a wide range of substrates and have exceptionally good weather, UV, and abrasion resistance.

Using inkjet technology, wide format printing services are more economical than other print methods such as screen printing for most short-run (low quantity) print projects, depending on the size and type of substrates.

Printing projects that can be custom-created range from real estate signs to hanging banners, vehicle wraps, wall coverings, and other various large-format graphics.

Printing Across Industries

Retail Printing: Wide-format printing is a valuable tool for various industries, including retail, hospitality, construction, and events. Retailers commonly use wide-format printing to create eye-catching in-store displays, posters, and signage that draw customers’ attention to specific products or promotions. Point-of-purchase displays, banners, and outdoor signage can also be created with wide-format printing to increase brand visibility and attract customers.

Hospitality: In the hospitality industry, wide-format printing can be used to create striking wall murals, elevator wraps, and event signage. Hotels, restaurants, and convention centers can use this printing technology to produce branded materials such as trade show displays, backdrops, and promotional signage.

Construction: In the construction industry, wide-format printing can be used to produce durable and weather-resistant banners, signage, and construction hoardings. These prints can be utilized to showcase the construction project, provide important information to workers and the public, and promote the construction company’s brand.

The Events Industry: Finally, events such as concerts, festivals, and sports events can benefit from wide-format printing by creating engaging event backdrops, directional signage, stage graphics, and promotional materials such as event posters, flyers, and banners. Wide-format printing can produce high-quality, large-format prints that grab attention and promote brand awareness for businesses across a variety of industries.

Creating Your Designs

High-Res Images: It is crucial to utilize high-resolution images when creating graphics for wide-format printing to guarantee that the printed image is clear and sharp without any distortion or blurriness. For large-format printing, it is recommended to have a resolution of at least 300 DPI (dots per inch).

Color Accuracy: In wide-format printing, color accuracy is critical because the final output must match the original design as closely as possible. Using a calibrated monitor and color profiles, as well as conducting test prints, are some of the ways to ensure accurate color reproduction.

Think About Viewing Distance: The viewing distance is also a factor to consider when designing graphics for wide-format printing. Images viewed up close require higher resolution and detail than those viewed from a distance. Therefore, designers must consider the intended viewing distance when selecting images and designing graphics.

File Formatting: When creating graphics for wide-format printing, it is important to use the correct file format, such as PDF, TIFF, or EPS, as required by wide-format printers. Ensure that files are provided in the appropriate size with sufficient margins and bleed.

Avoid Overcrowding: To ensure that the final product is visually pleasing and legible, designers should avoid overcrowding the design. Using negative space to balance the design and allowing it to breathe will help create an aesthetically appealing final product.
