What Is Flexographic Printing
Flexographic printing (Flexo) is a printing process that uses a flexible printing plate. It can be used for printing on almost any substrate, including plastic, metallic films, cellophane, and paper. It is used for printing on non-porous substrates required for various types of food labels and packaging (like dairy packaging).
The printing plates are wrapped around cylinders on the printing press. The inked plates rotate at high speeds and have a raised surface to transfer the ink to the substrate. Each color requires a different printing plate.
The flexographic print process:
- Runs at extremely high press speeds.
- Prints on a wide variety of substrate materials.
- Uses relatively low-cost consumables when compared to digital printing.
- Is ideally suited for long runs.
- Handles all printing, varnishing, laminating, and die-cutting in a single pass.
Common Applications for Flexographic Labels
Flexographic labels can be used on all types of products. The Flexographic process is perfect for large runs that can be printed on non-porous materials, and are ideal when printing large areas of a solid color. Flexographic labels are versatile and are most often used for:
- Custom printed tags
- Flexible packaging
- Pressure-sensitive labels
- Food & Beverage Labels
